Four for a boy

Fifteen minutes later, Grace decided that she was not enjoying her New Year’s Eve in the slightest. She ought to have been at a party, dancing around someone’s house, having a good time.

Yeah, definitely a good party, and not racing down the road towards Walker General, in the back of an ambulance with whoever was up front – Joey in all probability – driving as if he’d never driven anything larger than a bicycle. More than once she had muttered to Bruce about it, wondering if Joey had perhaps drunk more than he should. Bruce had shrugged and been quite taciturn, causing Grace to wonder if they’d both had too much office vino that afternoon.

The Doctor was being thankfully quiet, staring out of the rear window, hunched on the end of the stretcher in his ridiculous fancy dress costume, looking like he ought to be celebrating the end of the nineteenth century and not the twentieth.

‘What time is it?’ he said, looking back at her, a frown embedded in his forehead.

Grace glanced at her watch. ‘It’s just gone ten.’ She smiled, trying to humour him. Not long now and he’d be Roger Swift’s responsibility and she could head off to whatever party she could track down. ‘And don’t worry,’ she added, slightly maliciously. ‘I’m on the Board of Directors at the Institute. They’ll listen to me.’

The Doctor turned back to his observation of the way they had come and Bruce frowned. ‘Institute?’

Grace whispered back, pointing at the Doctor. ‘He thinks we’re going to find some sort of clock at the Institute of Technological Advancement and Research.’

Bruce nodded. ‘I wondered what he meant back at your place.’

‘Help me keep the pretence up, and have a sedative handy. When he sees the hospital, he’ll probably go ape.’

The Doctor suddenly swung back to her. ‘Grace, if you know the Board, why didn’t you tell me you had access to a beryllium atomic clock?’

Grace floundered for a second. Think! ‘I was more concerned and shocked by your discovery’

‘Discovery?’

‘Yeah, you know, that Eye of… Destruction?’

The Doctor nodded, as if that made it all clear. ‘Oh, of Harmony,’ he corrected.

Got away with that. Just. ‘Yes. That and the fact that this planet will be sucked through it at midnight.’ She smiled. ‘Let’s face it, how often does one have a Time Lord in one’s living room, Doctor?’

She threw a quick look at Bruce. ‘He likes me to call him “Doctor”. Freud had a name for it –’

‘“Transference”,’ said the Doctor. ‘That’s very good, Grace. But I don’t think so. Freud would have taken me seriously.’

Damn, he’d seen through her. Oh well, the hospital could not be far away. Mind you, Joey was obviously taking the long route. Carry on with the charade, Grace. ‘Freud would have hung up his pipe if he’d met you, Doctor.’

‘As a matter of fact, I did meet him once.’

‘Well, of course. You are a Time Lord, after all.’

Another look at Bruce. She felt as if she needed some support, but he was just staring at the Doctor through his shades.
